The Higher War College in Warsaw was established on June 15, 1919 as the War School of the General Staff. Its name was changed several times. Its last name was in effect from 1922. The school existed until 1939. It dealt during a two-year course with the education of higher staff officers and commanders at higher levels.
Graduation from the school gave the graduate the right to use, until 1928, the title of General Staff officer, and later of certified officer with higher military education. Graduates of the one-year post-training course and graduates of the French War College also had the right to wear this badge.
The badge was awarded by the Minister of Military Affairs at the request of the Chief of the General (General) Staff. It is estimated that some 1220 or 1357 officers graduated from the school.
