Annuity banks were established in Prussia under a law of March 2, 1850 to compensate landowners who lost their land to the enfranchisement of peasants. As compensation, annuity banks provided long-term loans for the loss of land, while peasants facilitated the redemption of easements and land burdens. The Annuity Bank for the Province of Poznań was one of seven that were established (in addition, there were annuity banks for the Silesian Province (Wrocław), the Pomeranian Province (Szczecin), the East and West Prussian Provinces (Königsberg), Brandenburg (Berlin), the Rhineland and Westphalia (Münster) and Saxony (Magdeburg)).
