Rare denier struck with immobilized dies of Centule IV.

Centule III (1012-1058) received sovereignty over the country from Sancho the Great, Duke of Aquitaine, and usurped the right to mint coins. In fact, the production of coins (obols and deniers) began no earlier than 1080, already during the reign of Centule IV (1058-1088), who took the name of the count. Centule V died in 1134. The issue of minting these coins with an unchanged, immobilized dies, lasted from ca. 1080 to ca. 1250.
