Rare medal minted on the occasion of the coronation of the royal couple in 1676.
Medal by Jan Höhn the younger, signed IH, in the cross-section of the arm.
Regarding the representation on the reverse, it is worth noting that the palm has been considered a sacred tree and a symbol of life since ancient times. Its slender trunk and leaves forming the crown symbolized the upward pursuit towards divinity. What is important is that even when loaded with fruit, the palm did not bend. The same was expected of the royal couple. Bound by mutual love, emphasized by the names carved on the trunk and the figure of Cupid, the married couple grew in fame, serving their country regardless of hardships and burdens. The palm also symbolized hope that under the rule of Jan III Sobieski, the country, despite being devastated by the war, would not give up and would strengthen. The sun with a human face, towering over the entire scene, is of course the personification of the sun king, whose glow illuminates the Republic of Poland.
Rare medal on the auction market.
Mint luster on both sides.
Obverse: two busts joined together, facing right, around them a thin wreath in the form of a border
Reverse: crowned palm tree with royal names on the trunk, above it the sun in its rays, in the distance a panorama of the city, winged Cupid next to the tree, below the inscription CORONATI 2 FEB 1676 (Crowned on February 2, 1676)
