Aelius (136- 138), Denarius 137, Rome mint

Obverse: bare head right

L AELIVS CAESAR

Reverse: Spes standing facing, head left, holding flower and rising skirt

Diameter 17 mm, weight 3.14 g

Aelius was the adopted son of Emperor Hadrian. He was elevated to the dignity of Caesar by him and was expected to be a successor, but unfortunately he died a few months before Hadrian. He is entitled L AELIVS CAESAR on his coins and is depicted with an uncovered head, curly hair, a beard, and a majestic face.
