Lot description
Grade: VF-
Reference: Crawford 540/2, Sydenham 1338

Very rare and desirable Octavian denarius minted by Mark Sanqvinius, monetary triumvir from 17 BC.  Katarzyna Balbuza in her study "Augustowskie emissions tresviri aere argento auro flando feriundo Between the republic and the empire - family or imperial propaganda?" writes: "The reverse of aureus and denarii from the Roman mint, signed on the reverse with his name, represent a comet above the head of the young man in a laurel wreath. The existing scientific interpretations of the iconography of the reverse go towards the tradition associated with Julius Caesar and Augustus in the context of, among others, ludi saeculares, which cannot be ruled out. However, it is also possible to refer to the gentilicium of the monetary triumvir - SANQVINIVS."
