C. Mamilius Limetanus (82 BC), Denarius serratus 82 BC, Rome mint

Obverse: draped bust of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus, behind caduceus

Reverse: Ulysses walking right, holding staff and extending hand to dog Argus, C MAMIL LIMETAN in fields

Weight 3,26 g.

C. Mamilius Limetanus claimed to be descended from Telegon, son of Hercules and Circe, and therefore of Mercury. Argos, Odysseus dog, died of joy and old age when he returned to Ithaca and recognized his master.
